In the age of texting and social media, you likely see bright yellow smiley faces everywhere for many kinds of situations, but did you know that its original meaning runs deeper? Today, on October 4, which is declared World Smile Day, you can celebrate smiling and spreading joy.

Continue reading to learn more about the story behind this commemorative day and how you can make the world a more smile-filled place.

Where the Smiley Face Comes from

It may be difficult to imagine a time when the yellow icon didn’t exist, but it was actually created by an artist right here in Worcester back in the 1960s during a tumultuous political and social time as a symbol of kindness. Its original intent was to encourage everyone to be compassionate to others, irrespective of their ethnicity, politics, religion, or socioeconomic standing.

World Smile Day Now

Since then, the smiley face has been commercialized and used in so many contexts that its meaning has been obscured. Fortunately, in 1999, World Smile Day was initiated as a reminder of the smiley face’s real intent. On this occasion, consider performing at least one act of kindness for someone in your community to help them smile and make their day a little brighter.

What You Can Do for Others

Although being kind doesn’t necessarily require doing something big, there are many opportunities for you and your child to get involved with wonderful causes in your local area to help those in need. Charities, organizations, and small businesses can host events to collect donations for school supplies, Toys for Tots, and more to give others a reason to smile. By helping out, you can teach your child early on that being kind to others can make them feel good too!

What You Can Do for Your Own Smile

In addition to being kind to those outside your family, you should also help your child practice self-care and self-love. However, if they aren’t taking proper care of their dental health, they aren’t being kind to themselves. On a daily basis, you need to make sure they brush and floss to prevent harmful cavities and infection. They also must see a pediatric dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings to maintain a healthy, strong smile.

Although World Smile Day occurs just once a year, you and your child can find and take advantage of little chances to spread kindness and happiness throughout the year!
